I AM BACK!!I am going to start by saying how EXCITED I am to be back at school! If you didn't know, I was away on maternity leave for 6 weeks. It was a long break but a rewarding one. I got to spend time learning to become a mom but I thought about my students EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Now that I am back, we are getting readjusted and back on track. TEXTURE: Actual VS. ImpliedusedStudents have been exploring TEXTURE this six weeks focusing mainly on IMPLIED TEXTURE (texture you can see but not feel) and ACTUAL TEXTURE (Texture you can feel and see). They began learning this with my long term substitute Ms. A but are finishing up with me. Students explored texture words by feeling something and using a word to describe it. For instance, they felt cotton and used the words "soft" or "fluffy" to describe it. ---- IDEA: Ask your child to use texture words when out and about on errands---- We then created some art using implied and actual texture Kindergarten created monsters that had IMPLIED texture by using a texture rubbing plate to give the illusion that their monster was "bumpy" or "rough" 1st Grade learned how to draw a rabbit that looks "hairy" but isn't actually hairy because it is just a drawing ;) We also talked about EXAGGERATION of an ACCESSORY for their rabbit. Some accessories that students came up with were a tuxedo, earrings, bow-ties, and even sunglasses. 2nd Grade used ACTUAL texture when creating their art piece inspired by the pop-artist JIM DINE. They used tissue paper and glue to give a "bumpy" and "rough" background then used oil pastel to color. 3rd Grade looked into our very own Texas Cactus to create their art piece that incorporated both ACTUAL and IMPLIED texture. There were A LOT of components to this piece so you will have to check it out for yourself... they are gorgeous! 4th Grade created hamburgers inspired by the artist CLAES OLDENBURG who made food inspired art that incorporated ACTUAL texture. I was so impressed with how well the students did with this project. Once they finished building their hamburgers, they even wrote a story about it. WOW CAN THESE KIDS WRITE!!! Such impressive and hilarious stories. Come by and read some! 5th Grade are going 3 dimensional with their texture projects. They created paper mache bowls! Getting messy is they way to a kids heart right? 6th Grade took a more relaxing approach to the texture unit and learned about fiber arts. They weaved a yarn "blanket" that incorporated a pattern of color. I think some of these kids are growing an appreciation for how things are made ;) Did I mention before how much I love these kids? 5th Grade Field Trip to AT&T Stadium!!I took a break from being a momma and went to the 5th Grade field trip to AT&T Stadium where we got to tour the stadium and see all of the art that they have displayed! -FUN FACT: I worked at the stadium for a short time and NEVER saw the art so this was a treat for me! The students were so well behaved and I believe got a better understanding and developed a deeper appreciation of the visual arts. What better way to learn than at a tour of the biggest football stadium in the NFL?!?! This is definitely something they (and I) will remember forever! Plus, we got to go inside the locker room! SO COOL! Now that we are back from the tour, the 5th grade ART students will collaboratively create an art piece that will be displayed inside the stadium in May! What a way to recognize our hard working 5th grade artists! I for one, am SO excited for this opportunity! *The art tour is reasonably priced... TAKE YOUR KIDS... it's worth it! The last of this year's art shows!Well we have reached the end of the 2016/17 school year art shows. We finished off with a bang... Youth Art Month at the Administration Building and at the Arlington Museum of Art. We had a great turn out for the Administration show but unfortunately there was not a reception for the show at the Museum. Here are some photos from these two final shows.

Winter break... a time of family, food, and relaxing. More importantly, TIME! Due to the bundles of time I have had, I finally have a chance to update you all on the amazing things that have taken place in the last few months! Get ready for an overload of cutness! 5th Grade STARS create Keith Haring self portraits! The 5th Grade Stars learned about LINE and how Keith Haring incorporated it to create movement within his work. While creating a piece that was inspired by his talents, we decided to "go big or go home." GIANT self portraits were made and funky lines were included. The kids LOVED how big and bold their masterpieces were and were proud to show them off in our art hallway! To incorporate multiple disciplines in our art room, we included an artist statement explaining the process, favorite parts, and overall uniqueness to our piece of art. I was AMAZED at how well our 5th graders write! Shout out to the 5th grade team for teaching these super stars the essentials of writing! Kindergarten INFORMANCE Day!Our very FIRST kidergarten informance day was GREAT! Miss Airhart and I loved having all the parents with us on Halloween to sample each multiple intelligence class. Ever see a jumbo blue crayon? That was me! Anyways, it was definitely special to see so many parents and family members take time off of work to visit with us and see how we learn in art class. The students displayed that in class we do not only learn by creating, we learn by using many different aspects of our brains. For example, we learn by listening to music, dancing, reading, and writing! Art isn't just about making but using our brains different ways to be creative! #artsmart #musicsmart #wordsmart #bodysmart ART SHOWS!!So according to many mouths at the art shows this year, Corey Academy has very talented artists... well DUH! I was SO PROUD to stand there next to that art and represent our students. When every person came by and gawked at the work displayed, I proudly and politely (with a huge smile) said thank you because that is what we do, but honestly, the best part of these shows for me, is seeing the faces of the students and watching them tell their families about what they created. They are beaming with joy and excitement and will remember this moment forever... I'm just thankful that I got to witness it! CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF OUR COREY ACADEMY ARTISTS! 6th Graders hard at work! Graffiti and Self Potraits6th Grade, where students choose an elective that fits their interests. Man, did I get lucky to receive these kids in my class! Each one with a different personality to add to discussion and some humor that cracks me up on the daily. Their creativity? Mind blowing. I am beyond impressed with what they bring to the table and the dedication some of them provide to their art. Add some incredible teachers with their own hidden talents and BAM, you get a class that is unforgettable. When creating their graffiti project, students had to choose an adjective that described them. During this process, I learned a whole lot about of dear 6th graders and what they thought of themselves. Some words used were "loyal" "gloomy" "leader" "friendly" "brave"... truly inspirational. The 6th grade HEARTS group just finished up their version of an Andy Warhol self portrait where they used different color schemes to create a funky version of themselves... but not until after we took some real selfies to use on our poject! Keep and eye out for these in the hallways! 4th Grade VALUEWell let me tell you bout' my 4th graders! They really know how to impress their art teacher. Completing a task that I myself did in high school and know that adults struggle with! We learned about VALUE in color and how you can create different tones, tints, and shades with only 3 paints... a color, white, and black! Each and every 4th grader did this without flaw. They learned to paint without mixing first, how much paint is too much, and that they are super stars! Come check out our work! MEMORIES TO LAST A LIFETIME! |
